What is facial implant surgery?
Facial implant surgery refers to procedures which use implants to build up or add prominence to the facial features. Facial implants may be used for the chin, cheeks or jaw to enhance the facial contours or bring better balance to the overall facial appearance.

Who is a candidate for facial implant surgery?
Candidates for facial implant surgery include men and women who are looking to enhance the appearance of the chin, cheeks or jaw. It's also important that facial implant candidates be in good physical health, psychologically stable and have realistic expectations.

What occurs during a consultation for facial implant surgery?
During the consultation for facial implant surgery, you will meet with either Dr. Duboys or Dr. Sirota. After carefully examining your face, the doctor will discuss your expectations and the possibilities available to you. All details of the facial implant procedure will be explained and any questions that you have answered.

Where is facial implant surgery performed?
At Associated Plastic Surgeons & Consultants, Dr. Duboys and Dr. Sirota may perform the facial implant surgery in their in-office operating room, a state-of-the-art facility that is fully approved by the American Association for the Accreditation of Surgery Facilities (AAAASF) for class A/B/C surgical procedures.

What form of anesthesia is facial implant surgery performed with?
Dr. Duboys and Dr. Sirota may perform the facial implant surgery with either local anesthesia and sedation or with general anesthesia.

How is facial implant surgery performed?
For chin implants, a small incision is made on the inside of the lower lip or beneath the chin and the implant is then inserted over the front of the jawbone. For cheek implants, the incisions may be made on the inside of the upper lip or on the lower eyelids and the implants are then inserted on or below the cheekbones. If cheek implant surgery is being performed at the same time as another procedure, the implants may be able to be inserted through the incisions made for that procedure. For lower jaw surgery, incisions are made on either side of the inside of the lower lip and the implant is then inserted over the front of jawbone.

How long is the surgical time for facial implant surgery?
Surgery involving cheek implants or chin implants may take an average of thirty minutes to an hour to complete. Jaw implants may take longer, about one to two hours.

Where are the incisions made for facial implant surgery?
Chin implants require that a small incision be made on the inside of the lower lip or beneath the chin. For cheek implants, incisions may be made on the inside of the upper lip or on the lower eyelids. For jaw implants, an incision is made on the inside of the lower lip on each side.

Are there scars after the facial implant procedure?
The incisions and resulting scars for facial implant surgery are either hidden or well concealed as they may be located on the inside of the mouth, under the chin or on the lower eyelids.

How much pain is associated with facial implant surgery?
There cam be some amount of discomfort after facial implant surgery. In particular, patients may find facial movements like smiling and talking difficult at first. Prescription medication can help to alleviate discomfort.

What sort of recovery is there after facial implant surgery?
After facial implant surgery, tape or dressings may be applied to the treatment area. Patients can expect some swelling and bruising during the first few days, though swelling can remain for as much as several months after lower jaw surgery. Patients may also experience difficulty with facial movements like smiling and talking. Dietary restrictions may be necessary.

How soon after facial implant surgery can patients return to work?
Most patients are able to return to work and most other normal activities within about one week after undergoing facial implant surgery.
