Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
The breast lift, or mastopexy, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to improve the appearance of sagging breasts. The surgery raises and reshapes the breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning the breasts and nipples. During surgery, the areolas may be reduced in size as well.
After a careful evaluation, Dr. Duboys or Dr. Sirota will discuss the possibilities and recommended procedure. They may advise that surgery be postponed for those who are planning future pregnancies.
Dr. Duboys and Dr. Sirota typically perform mastopexy surgery at their in-office surgical facility at Associated Plastic Surgeons. This is a state-of-the-art operating room that is fully approved by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities (AAAASF). The procedure can take between one to three hours to complete and is commonly performed under general anesthesia. The incision for the breast depends upon the recommended procedure. Large, pendulous breasts, require an incision shaped like an anchor, while a less extensive incision may be made for women with smaller breasts and minimal sagging. Patients should be aware that the incision for the breast lift will result in a permanent and noticeable scar though it can be concealed by most bathing suits and bras.
The exact nature of the breast lift surgery will vary for each patient. In general, however, excess skin is removed and the nipple and areola are moved to a higher position. Patients will need to wear a surgical bra after surgery for a period of time. Swelling and bruising are common and some temporary numbness may also occur. Medication will be prescribed to help alleviate discomfort. Patients usually feel well enough to return to work and other normal activities within about one to two weeks after the breast lift.
