Facial Implants

Facial surgery is most often done to bring the face into balance by building up the chin, the cheeks, or the jaw.

Facial implant surgery is designed to build up or add prominence to facial features like the chin, cheeks or jaw.  Implants can improve and enhance the facial contours and bring better balance to the facial features.

The procedure is typically performed  in-office at our ambulatory surgical.  This is a state-of-the-art operating room that is fully approved by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities (AAAASF).  Facial surgery with chin or cheek implants takes about thirty minutes to an hour to complete while the insertion of a jaw implant may take one to two hours.  Either local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia may be used.

For chin implants, the incision may be located on the inside of the lower lip or beneath the chin.  For cheek implants, the incisions may be made inside the upper lip or lower eyelid.  If the surgery is performed along with another procedure, it may be possible to insert the cheek implants through the incisions made for that procedure.  For lower jaw surgery, incisions are made on the inside of the mouth on either side of the lower lip.  Once the incisions are made, the proper size and shape implant is inserted over the front of the jawbone or on or below the cheekbone.

A short incision under the chin or inside the mouth allows the surgeon to place a chin implant directly on the bone.

Cheek implants are usually inserted through an incision in the mouth and placed directly on (or even below) the cheekbone. These implants can vary in size and shape

Tape or dressings may be applied after surgery and some swelling and bruising may be present for several days.  Some mild prolonged swelling may last for as much as several months after lower jaw surgery.  Facial movements like smiling and talking may be limited at first and dietary restrictions may be necessary.  Medication can be prescribed to help control any discomfort that occurs after facial implant surgery.  Patients typically feel well enough to return to work within several days.

Jaw implants are placed directly on the jawbone to create a stronger, more defined jaw line

Facial implants help change the basic structure of the face to give a fuller, more balanced look.
