NASAL SURGERY / RHINOPLASTY

Nasal surgery, or rhinoplasty, is a plastic surgical procedure designed to reshape the nose.  There are many improvements that can be made to the nose including a reduction or increase in size, a change in the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrowing of the span of the nostrils, or a change in the angle between the nose and upper lip.  Some breathing problems may also be corrected during nasal surgery.  Rhinoplasty may be performed for aesthetic purposes as well as reconstructive purposes.

Those considering nasal surgery must be physically healthy, psychologically stable and realistic in their expectations for the outcome of the surgery.   During your consultation, Dr.  Duboys or Dr.  Sirota will carefully examine your and discuss the esthetic as well as functional possibilities available.  It is  important that you discuss your expectations in detail with the doctors at this time.  Surgery may be postponed for younger patients until they’ve completed their growth spurt, which typically occurs around the age of 16-17 for males and 15-16 for females.

Dr.  Duboys and  Dr. Sirota typically perform nasal surgery in  their in-office surgical facility at Associated Plastic Surgeons.  This is a state-of-the-art operating room that is fully approved by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical  Facilities (AAAASF). Nasal surgery typically takes one to two hours to complete and may be performed with local anesthesia and light sedation or with general anesthesia.   Incisions are often confined to the inside of the nose, which is referred to as closed rhinoplasty.  In some cases, an additional small incision may be made on the area between the nostrils, which is referred to as open rhinoplasty.   Incisions made on the inside of the nose leave no visible scarring while those  made on the underside of the nose leaves a small, well-concealed scar.

The exact nature of the surgery will depend on the particular changes that need to be made.   In general, bone and cartilage are sculpted in order to achieve the desired shape.  A splint will be applied to the nose after surgery which will remains in place for about 7-10 days.   Some swelling and bruising is common, particularly around the eyes, the majority of which  will fade after about two weeks.   Medication can be prescribed to help alleviate any discomfort that patients experience.  Patients typically feel well enough to return to work and most other normal activities after one to two weeks.

Nasal surgery can be a very rewarding experience, enhancing not only your appearance but self confidence as well.
