Breast Reconstruction

Breast Reconstruction Long Island

Specialized Cosmetic Surgeon In Long Island, NY Area

Mastectomy is often necessary for women diagnosed with breast cancer, and the deformity can be devastating. Unfortunately, our society often associates breasts with being a "real woman", and the loss of a breast (or both) can damage a woman's self-esteem, even if it is to save her life.

Dr. Elliot Duboys of Associated Plastic Surgeons has been providing women in the Long Island, Nassau County and Suffolk County, NY area utilizing the latest techniques in breast reconstruction for over 30 years. We understand that this time can be traumatic and difficult, and we will be there to guide you through your journey every step of the way.

What Is Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction not only involves reconstructing a breast utilizing either implants (silicone or saline), tissue expanders but also the patient's own tissue. Thanks to modern technology and techniques, it is often possible to create a breast with the shape and appearance of a natural breast.

Breast Reconstruction Procedure

The First Stage: The creation of the breast mound which is usually performed at the same time as a mastectomy but may be performed at a later date in a hospital under general anesthesia.

The Second Stage: of reconstruction involves the removal of a tissue expander (if this technique is used) and insertion of a permanent prosthesis, nipple reconstruction or symmetrizing surgery such as augmentation or reduction on the opposite breast for a closer, more natural match. Furthermore, several visits and procedures will be necessary to achieve the desired results.

Breast Reconstruction Recovery

Depending on the type of breast reconstruction procedure, recovery will vary. Breast Reconstruction following mastectomy has now become the standard and we perform them frequently and simultaneously with mastectomy, although we may perform it later depending upon circumstances. We may require patients to stay in the hospital for up to a week following the procedure.

Patients may feel sore and tired for up to 2 weeks. Recovery can take up to 6 weeks, at most. Patients will typically wear compression garments. After about 10 days, Dr. Duboys will remove your stitches. We will leave a surgical drain in place so as to prevent the buildup of fluid. We will remove it within 1 to 2 weeks.

Breast Reconstruction Risks

In addition to the risks associated with surgery and anesthesia, the risks that can occur include:

  • Infection around the implant
  • Implant leaks and ruptures
  • Implant deflation or shifting

To correct any reconstruction issues will also require additional surgery.
