Specialized Cosmetic Surgeon In Long Island, NY Area
Mastectomy is often necessary for women diagnosed with breast cancer, and the deformity can be devastating. Unfortunately, our society often associates breasts with being a “real woman”, and the loss of a breast (or both) can damage a woman’s self-esteem, even if it is done to save her life. Breast Reconstruction following mastectomy has now become the standard and is frequently performed simultaneously with mastectomy, although it may be performed later depending upon circumstances.
Dr. Elliot Duboys of Associated Plastic Surgeons has been providing women in the Long Island, Nassau County and Suffolk County, NY area utilizing the latest techniques in breast reconstruction for over 30 years. We understand that this time can be traumatic and difficult, and we will be there to guide you through your journey every step of the way.
What Is Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction involves reconstructing a breast utilizing either implants (silicone or saline), tissue expanders, or the patient’s own tissue. Thanks to modern technology and techniques, it is often possible to create a breast with the shape and appearance of a natural breast.
Breast Reconstruction Often Involves Several Stages:
The First Stage: is the creation of the breast mound which is usually performed at the same time as a mastectomy but may be performed at a later date in a hospital under general anesthesia.
The Second Stage: of reconstruction involves the removal of a tissue expander (if this technique is used) and insertion of a permanent prosthesis, nipple reconstruction or symmetrizing surgery such as augmentation or reduction on the opposite breast for a closer, more natural match. Several visits and procedures will be necessary to achieve the desired results.
